Celina was named by its first postmaster, John T. Mulkey, for his hometown of Celina, Tennessee. When the St. Louis, San Francisco and Texas Railway reached the area in 1902, the whole town moved one mile north to meet it, houses and businesses rolled along on rollers, and the town called itself Rollertown. From 1910 the business section was rebuilt in uniform brick around the square that still anchors downtown, and in 1915 Celina Pike opened as the first road in the county built only for automobiles. The 2020 census counted 16,739 people, and more than half of Celina households have children at home.
